Dada Wave Dance
Dada “dance” didn’t begin as a formal technique—it grew out of anarchic performances at Cabaret Voltaire during and after World War I. Artists rejected traditional art forms because they felt a rational, orderly culture had led to chaos and war. So their movement style became intentionally irrational.
What makes Dada dance unique?
1. Rejection of traditional dance
Instead of grace, harmony, or storytelling, Dada performers used:
● clumsy, awkward gestures
● repetitive or meaningless motions
● movements that looked unfinished or “wrong”
It was a rebellion against beauty and technique.
2. Chance and improvisation
Dada embraced randomness:
● movements could be improvised
● sequences might be decided by chance
● performers sometimes ignored music entirely
This reflected the idea that life itself is unpredictable and absurd.
3. Absurdity and nonsense
Performances often included:
● bizarre costumes that restricted or exaggerated movement
● nonsensical gestures
● mixing dance with sound poetry and theater
For example, Hugo Ball performed in stiff, geometric outfits that turned the body into something almost mechanical.
4. Dance as provocation
Dada wasn’t about pleasing audiences—it was about shocking them:
● confusing, chaotic performances
● breaking expectations of what “dance” should be
● sometimes even mocking the audience
Dance became a form of protest and critique, not entertainment.
5. The body as object
Instead of expressing emotion, the dancer’s body could appear:
● mechanical or puppet-like
● fragmented or disjointed
● stripped of individuality
This challenged the idea of dance as purely expressive or human-centered.
6. Why it still matters
Dada movement changed how we think about performance:
● It showed that anything can count as dance
● It influenced performance art, experimental theater, and avant-garde choreography
● It opened the door for artists to use the body as a conceptual tool, not just an aesthetic one
For this video soundscapes were generated with Tastychips GR-Mega as well s various sources within Ableton. All images are generated with Midjourney and either animated with the same tool or with Kling. The background color waves anymation was done with Touchdesigner.
